Hooray for Health Awareness Day
Instead of bringing the people to the hospital, the hospital decided to spice things up this year by bringing the hospital to the people.
President Square shoppers were pleasantly surprised when they were presented with the opportunity to participate in Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital’s Health Awareness Day.
Instead of bringing the people to the hospital, the Health and Safety Department decided to spice things up this year by bringing the hospital to the people.

This took place on Wednesday, 18 April and the theme for this year’s Health Awareness Month is Health for All.
Since it was their first time creating awareness outside the hospital building, the exhibit only covered a few vital elements, including the screening of blood pressure, blood glucose levels, cholesterol and Body Mass Index (BMI).

According to Claudette Smit, Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator, they saw a total of 168 community members, with approximately two out five people being tested for a BMI above 25, which falls within the overweight range.

There were also about five people identified with high cholesterol, who were subsequently advised to follow up with their doctor or local clinic.
They even had a dietitian available to extend any advice to interested parties. After each community member was screened, they also received some healthy snacks including suggested cereals and popcorn.
