Another Yusuf Dadoo Hospital complaint – hospital management gives lacklustre response
"Her arm (from the elbow down) is bruised purple and black, and there was blood on the sheets. This is not the hand she had the drip in, and they're not needle marks, they're deep long cuts."
Orsiela Wiese has posted a worrisome complaint about Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital on Facebook, claiming that hospital staff had treated her mother, who was a patient there “like an animal”.
“I had to rush my mother (who has severe dementia) to casualty on Tuesday, 22 May, because the frail care centre where she lives told me that she was retaining water,” Wiese began explaining.
“She was very ill because she had also been diagnosed with pneumonia the Friday before.”
Wiese claims she took her mother to the hospital, spent close to two hours waiting for a doctor, and was yelled at.
“Then a doctor came and he was very helpful. He was concerned over her pneumonia and kidneys, and told me that he was going to admit her for three days, to put her on a drip with antibiotics. I fetched clothing and toiletries and took them to her in the ward.”

Her mother was discharged on Thursday, 24 May, the day the complaint was posted.

“I queried why they didn’t finish with the three-day treatment as prescribed by the casualty doctor, and was informed that a new doctor had said that she must go. When I collected her from hospital, she was moaning and crying. She didn’t have her own pajamas on. They dressed her in a paper-thin ‘dress’. She was shivering from the cold, and I was told that we should have brought our own blankets and a pillow as the hospital doesn’t have any. She was lying under a thin sheet. She whimpered as she told me how they had yelled and screamed at her, and pushed her, treating her ‘roughly’. The worst is, it looks like she was badly mishandled. She has three long cuts on her arm. Her arm (from the elbow down) is bruised purple and black, and there was blood on the sheets. This is not the hand she had the drip in, and they are not needle marks, they’re deep long cuts. When I asked how they happened, I was told, ‘I don’t know. I don’t want to lie’.”
Puseletso Mabidikame, spokesperson for the hospital, responded that hospital management was treating this matter with urgency and seriousness.
“Currently, all allegations are being investigated. Relevant disciplinary measures will be applied should there have been any misconduct.”
She encouraged the community to report any misconduct or challenges encountered at the hospital, by contacting the complaints and quality assurance manager, Ms J Mgiba, on 011 951 6159 or 011 951 6161.
