Security guards catch suspects stealing from MTN Tower

"The suspects had cut the fence surrounding the training centre and made their way to the MTN tower which is in the same vicinity."

Police arrested two suspects and are looking for a third after they caught them stealing batteries from an MTN tower in Chamdor on Friday, 25 May.

An eyewitness said that he received a complaint of theft and proceeded to the scene.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police Station, said the eyewitness arrived on the scene with security guards and saw one of the suspects carrying a huge black network tower battery to the getaway car.

“He noticed that there were two more suspects, one of which spotted the witness and security guards and immediately fled the scene on foot,” Sibiya said. The other two suspects were apprehended by the guards. On searching them and their vehicle, four network batteries were found in the vehicle.

“The suspects had cut the fence surrounding the training centre and made their way to the tower which is in the same vicinity.”

The suspects, aged 29 and 39 respectively, were taken to Kagiso Police Station where a case of theft and business burglary was opened.

They have made a brief appearance in court and were remanded in custody for a formal bail application to be made.
