Melodie van Brakel, founder of the Cradle of Hope, an local organisation which helps destitute women with children as well as homeless women, gave some tips for the homeless to stay safe:
• First of all, try using the services that shelters offer, like a safe bed, a hot plate of food, etc.
• If this is not possible, try to find somewhere where you are fairly sheltered from the wind and rain.
• Do not sleep directly on the ground, sleep on top of cardboard boxes or blankets.
• Sleep where there are other people, not on your own.
• Sleeping where there is a fair amount of light is safer.
• Keep your money and your documents on your body.
• If you are attacked or robbed, report it to the nearest police station.
• Using alcohol, pills or drugs will increase the risk of attack or robbery.
• Some shelters can lock and hold your possessions for you – make use of the service.
The Tower of Life Shelter has a voucher system where members of the community can buy vouchers at the shelter to give to homeless people, instead of giving them money. A R20 voucher gives the person a warm bed for the night, a warm shower and a plate of hot food. You can also buy these vouchers and leave them at the shelter, for those who really can’t afford them. Homeless people can also buy these vouchers for themselves and sleep warm and safe for the night.
The address of the mens’ shelter is the old NG church hall, corner of Rissik and Church Streets. The women’s shelter is at 051 Burger Street.
