[FOLLOW UP] Conflicting reports on cause of death of man found in hole

It was speculated that the deceased was an illegal miner, but police have not yet determined his cause of death.

Krugersdorp Police said they aren’t sure about the identity of the man who was found dead in a hole yesterday, 20 June. Until an official investigation has been concluded, it would be hard to say what the cause of his death was.
The hole he was found in is in an open field at the side of the R28 between Randfontein and Krugersdorp.

Emergency services pulling the body out of the deep hole it had been in for more than four months.

“The body could have been in the well for some time. No mining equipment was found on the inside but illegal mining could not be excluded. The cause of death will be determined by Pathology Services,” said Sergeant Tshepiso Mashele, spokesperson of the Krugersdorp Police.

Another theory is that because there are many bee hives in the area, the man could have fallen into the hole while he was trying to get to the hives.
