He raped 12 women, now he’ll pay for it

Kito Malumbele also received a 15-year prison sentence for engaging in sexual activities in front of a minor.

“You can run, but you can’t hide forever.” These are the words of the new station commander at the Kagiso Police Station, Brigadier Themba Maduna, after he saw a serial rapist being convicted and sentenced last week.

Serial rapist Kito Malumbele, 32, received a hefty sentence for 61 charges against him. Malumbele was convicted on 14 June and received 15 life sentences for raping 12 women, 50 years for armed robbery, 25 years for kidnapping and assault, 15 years for unlawful possession of a firearm, and 15 years for engaging in sexual activities in front of a minor.

The convicted rapist started his reign of terror in 2014. He targeted young women between the ages of 17 and 25 walking alone in open spaces in Tshepisong and Tshepisong West. Malumbele held his victims at knifepoint and ordered them into the tall grass and bushes where he raped them. He would then rob them of their personal belongings like cellphones, purses, cash and anything else of value.

The accused committed these crimes with his accomplices who are presently waiting to be tried in August. Once he realised the police were on his trail, he went into hiding in Finetown, Lenasia South.

“Our investigating team worked tirelessly around the clock to track him down. He was finally arrested in 2016 and later detained at Kagiso Police Station,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the station.

“The co-operation shown by all victims and witnesses was excellent and it made the job easy for our hard working investigating officer, Captain Bvuma,” said Brigadier Maduna.
