Serial rapist who tormented the West Rand finally sent to jail

By the time he was convicted, he had raped 13 women, of whom the youngest was only 15 years old.

Kito Christopher Malumbele, 29, is a man who, for three years, tormented the Kagiso, Tshepisong, Roodepoort, Dobsonville and Lenasia areas and struck fear into the hearts of anyone who came across him.

His modus operandi was to force women pedestrians to an open field in the area where he was operating at the time.

There he then robbed them at knife-point and raped them. By the time he was convicted, he had raped 13 women, the youngest of whom was only 15 years old.

With the help of modern forensic testing and ample evidence linking him to the crimes, he was brought to justice. The investigating officer, Captain Thomas Bvuma, saw the cases through court and Malumbele was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, 50 years’ imprisonment for robbery, and 25 years’ imprisonment for kidnapping. He will effectively serve a life sentence.

Lieutenant Colonel Kathy Segotta, commander of the West Rand Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Assault (FCS) Unit, congratulated the investigating officer on the effort and long hours spent in preparing the cases for court.

“The dedication and determination of the investigator were paramount in the successful conclusion of these heinous crimes. The team effort between the police and the National Prosecuting Authority also needs to be mentioned,” said Segotta.
