A post from a former Mogale City mayor about his white neighbours goes viral giving a message of hope all South Africans desperately need.

A former mayor of Mogale City Local Municipality who served in the early 2000’s, Lentswe Mokgatle, has expressed his heartfelt appreciation towards his neighbours who jumped in to help extinguish a fire ripping through his farm.

In his Facebook post, Mokgatle said he does not know how the fire broke out on Friday night, 24 August, but that he is most thankful for all the help he received from Afrikaners.

“My farm’s been on fire tonight. I don’t know who started the fire but, as things happen out here, my neighbours came rushing in their bakkies and helped the fire brigade to douse it before it caused greater damage. Guess what, they are all Afrikaners,” his post read.

It is not clear where his farm is situated.

His post has been shared more than 11 000 times on Facebook and has over 430 comments with 3 500 people viewing the post as well. Comments like, “Sorry to hear that, Lentswe Mokgatle. Appreciate the help from neighbours, they are great people indeed,” and “Farmers have to stick together … so glad you had helping hand. Hope there wasn’t too much damage,” were written.

His post on Twitter even received a response from Steve Hofmeyr, who said that if Afrikaners are accepted in society, they will go to the moon and back for their neighbours.
