EWP employees want answers
They raised various issues mainly pertaining to their employment, payment and safety.
Approximately 560 Extended Work Program (EWP) employees gathered at the Mogale City Local Municipality on Monday, 27 August, where they demanded answers from Executive Mayor, Councillor Naga Patrick Lipudi.
They raised various issues mainly pertaining to their employment, payment and safety.
One of the employees, Thabiso Molefe, explained they are employed by the municipality on six-monthly renewable contracts.

According to another employee, Sizakele Zwane, they also discussed their daily rate which was R115 prior to their most recent contract renewal on 1 July. However, after the renewal they soon discovered that the rate had been lowered to R103.
To top it off, they didn’t receive their contracts for the period January to June due to the municipality’s lack of resources.
They explained that the mayor promised to increase their rate to R130 within the next few months. This promise immediately raised a few eyebrows.
They are also concerned about not receiving any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to do their jobs. They even signed a petition against the lowered rates and PPE, but to no avail.
The News is still waiting for feedback from the municipality about the way forward.
