Nursing school holds first-ever reunion
Members resolved to form a permanent committee which will deal with discussing and concluding decisions on the items raised by the alumni.
Nurses who trained and qualified at Leratong Hospital’s Nursing College between February 1978 and 2001 met in Leratong’s recreational hall for the first-ever reunion.
There were tears of joy, hugs and kisses as some nurses saw each other for the first time in 20, 30 and even 40 years.
The attendees were welcomed by the task team members and were provided with a sumptuous continental breakfast. Monnatau Tlholoe opened the ceremony with an inspiring prayer. After the prayer, members undertook the Memory Lane Walk, reorienting themselves to the hospital. The walk was led by Jerry Modipa, who showed the nurses the improvements done in the institution over the pass 40 years.

Sanna Selaotswe kept the guests entertained with her angelic renditions of hymns and choruses.
Each person was afforded an opportunity to introduce him- or herself, according to their training group, by Ouma Sizane, who then presented a talk on the history of nursing training at Leratong.
Training started at Leratong Mini-College during February 1978 for the first group of those studying towards the Nursing Diploma. The first midwifery training started in February 1982. The last intake for the three-year Nursing Diploma group was in 1985. In January 1986, the first four-year Nursing Diploma intake started. Later, Leratong Hospital Nursing College merged with the Boksburg Benoni, Natalspruit and Sebokeng Nursing Colleges to form the Bonalesedi Nursing College, which is currently operational.

In solemn moments which brought tears to most nurses eyes, the Nurses Pledge of Service recital was led by Thembeka Radebe. The In Memorial ceremony for the 46 dearly departed was led by Motsilisi Sepanya. During this ceremony, 46 members held 46 lit candles, each of which was blown out after the calling of the deceased member’s name.
Members resolved to form a permanent committee which will deal with discussing and concluding decisions on the items raised by the alumni, namely, the frequency of the meeting, the venue, community service initiatives for the alumni, control of funds, and planning of future events.
After the cutting of the giant Leratong Alumni cake, the members started networking and catching up with one another.
