[FOLLOW UP] Let’s give these dogs more than just a bone

Over R10 000 as well as some food and doggy treats were donated to the 9th Day Animal Rescue Shelter.

The News girls, Janine Viljoen and Alanicka Lotriet, together with Donna Groothedde from Donna’s Health and Fitness, visited the 9th Day Animal Rescue Shelter recently to hand over over R10 000 as well as some food and doggy treats.

The food and treats that were generously donated by the members of Donna’s Health and Fitness.

The funds and goods were raised during Donna’s annual tri-challenge fitness endurance charity drive in August, in which the News girls participated as part of the Caxton Cares campaign.

The funds and food will not last long, but for about two weeks, it should be enough to feed all the dogs on the premises.

Upon entering the shelter, it is clear that it’s in desperate need of any form of help. The founder of the shelter, Charmaine Booysens, opened the shelter in 2015 and since the Krugersdorp SPCA closed its doors, she has experienced tremendous pressure in helping the community with stray and unwanted dogs. Charmaine is also struggling with a huge vet bill and part of the funds donated to her will be utilised for that.

Shelter workers, Suzette Aucamp and Meryna Naude, told the News how heartbreaking it is when they welcome a hungry and often seriously neglected dog to the shelter.

Despite their demanding needs, the spirits of the workers and the love and care they give to the dogs show that they are not going to give up any time soon.

Charmaine and her team accept any form of help, so Donna and the News girls are challenging other businesses and organisations in Krugersdorp to get involved.
