Man sets his ex-girlfriend alight

A man set his ex-girlfriend on fire after it became clear that she was not going to take him back.

In a tragic turn of events, a young woman has died at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.

On 18 October at 9.30pm, a 44-year-old man from central Kagiso arrived at the house that his 42-year-old ex-girlfriend shared with her mother, after moving out of his place.

The man wanted to talk to his ex-girlfriend but she did not want to talk to him and tried to hide from him. He then told her mother that he understands that their relationship is over but that he just wants her to come fetch her belongings from his house.

The woman eventually gave in and went with the man.

At about 11pm the woman’s sister phoned her mother to find out where she was. Her mother told her sister she’d gone to fetch her things from the man’s house.

The sister informed her mother that the man had phoned her and told her that he had burned his ex-girlfriend.

He allegedly doused the woman with paraffin and set her alight before trying to burn himself as well.

The woman’s mother found her in hospital with severe burn wounds. Unfortunately, she did not make it and died at 3am on 22 October.

The search for the man continued until about 2pm on 22 October, when staff at the hospital told the police that a man with severe burn wounds whose story did not make a lot of sense had been admitted to the hospital. The police investigated and found that it was the same man.

The man is currently under police guard at the hospital and he will appear in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court, on charges of murder, when he has recovered.
