[WATCH] Pedestrian struck by car, even after trying to cross safely

The witness told the News that she crosses that road on a regular basis and even with the light and zebra stripes it is still very dangerous to cross.

Traffic on Voortrekker Road was disrupted because of a pedestrian accident yesterday afternoon, 13 November.

A woman, who was trying to cross the street at the Witpoortjie Train Station crossing on Voortrekker Road, was struck by a vehicle just after 4.30pm.

According to a witness, she and the other pedestrians were waiting for the light to turn red and indicate to oncoming traffic that they need to stop for the pedestrians to cross the road.

“Someone had already pushed the button for the light to turn and when it did, the woman crossed on the zebra stripes,” said the witness.

It is alleged that just as the woman started to cross the street she was hit by the car.

A Quick Response Services (QRS) ambulance responded to the scene, and transported the woman, who allegedly suffered moderate injuries, to a nearby hospital.

The witness told the News that she crosses that road on a regular basis and even with the light and zebra stripes it is still very dangerous to cross there as most motorists do not stop when the light is red.

According to reports, the driver of the car stayed at the scene until the woman was taken away by the ambulance.
