Local drummer living to the beat of his own drum

It is none other than Noordheuwel's own Mark Trump, who has been rocking the drums for the past 33 years.

Noordheuwel’s Mark Trump has been rocking the drums for the past 33 years.

In those years, he has also performed in theatre, marching bands and – from time to time – classical orchestras. He is currently the drummer for The Blacktop Rebels – a thundering local rock band.

But since he aims to perpetuate knowledge and inspire learning, he started teaching within the field approximately 15 years ago. Through one-on-one private tuition, classroom teaching and full-time course lecturing, he has generated many students who are actively performing abroad and within the South African music industry.

Having enjoyed teaching so much, he decided to kick it up a notch. Approximately four years ago he completed his first book, Rhythm Reading, which was adapted for his creation of Rhythm Bud – an educational scaffolding tool that assists students in a practical way that allows them to better understand note values in written time.

He even has ambitions to have this converted into an app so that the Rhyme Bud can be used on more levels of understanding.
