Hekpoort community unhappy with mayor’s answers

Sources told the News that live ammunition was fired at the community as the mayor was being escorted out of the community hall.

Community members and road users are urged to avoid areas around Hekpoort as protest action is under way.

On Saturday, 16 November, Mogale City’s Executive Mayor, Naga Patrick Lipudi, was allegedly attending a meeting with community members in Hekpoort.

According to Constable Gloria Maswanganye, the Hekpoort Police spokesperson, community members were demanding a place to stay.

“They claimed that they have been promised RDP houses since 1994. They told the mayor they must at least be given stands and then they will build their own shacks,” Maswanganye explained.

She said that most of these people are living on the farms of their employers.

According to Maswanganye community members were not satisfied with the answers they received and started burning tyres and throwing stones at officials until the Public Order Policing Unit (Pops) was called in to calm down the situation.
