Soldiers fight after life knocks them down

According to Major Amenda Doubell, administrator of the centre, they assist families, abused women and children as well as male substance abusers.

When fiery Methodist Evangelist William Booth decided in 1865 that he could no longer preach to the poor and wretched of England unless he also put food into their stomachs, he probably didn’t imagine that the movement he started would grow into a worldwide organisation known as The Salvation Army.

Nearly 150 years later, more than 26 000 officers of The Salvation Army, of whom 17 000 are active, undertake the work of the organisation through more than 15 000 corps, outposts, new plants and recovery churches.

Krugersdorp is no exception, as it is home to both a Salvation Army family care centre and church. According to Major Amenda Doubell, administrator of the centre, they assist homeless and destitute people, including families.

She also mentioned that the thrift store, which was situated in Ockerse Street in the CBD, has now moved to the care centre premises on the corner of Bodenstein and Seventh Streets in Dan Pienaarville. The store sells beautiful pre-loved goods such as clothes, all kinds of ornaments and Christmas decorations, among other things. The church, however, remains in the CBD.

According to Amenda, the store is one of the platforms that provides unemployed residents with the opportunity to earn a small amount of money that enables them to buy basic necessities like toiletries.

All residents pay R20 per day towards accommodation costs. They also have a divisional social worker who assists with some of the cases.

They currently house a total of 45 people who are desperate to get back on their feet after life knocked them down. If you are interested in finding out more or supporting the cause, feel free to contact 011 953 1739.
