Two illegal miners die in rockfall incident

Three men were caught in the rockfall, but only one came out alive.

Yesterday, 29 November, at about 4.30pm, Netcare 911 emergency services were called out to an open piece of land off Reserve Street in Wentworth Park.

The News’ trainee journalist, Jaco Human, was at the scene when the police and emergency services came across a hole in the ground large enough for a grown man to climb through. This was right opposite the train tracks.

An underground rockfall had occurred, and three illegal miners (zama-zamas) were caught in the falling rubble.
A member of the Canine Search and Rescue Unit was on the scene. He revealed that two of the men had died in the rockfall, and that the remaining one was seriously injured, with a broken pelvis and severe bruising. He was promptly rushed to the hospital.

Other illegal miners remained on the site after the ambulance had left, but none were seriously injured.
It is still unclear if a ground tremor or the actions of the zama-zamas caused the rockfall, though it is believed that the latter is more likely.
