King B takes his last bow
The HR student has been a firm favourite since his dazzling Theatre Week Performance, which saw him get a standing ovation.
Kagiso artist, Basimane Boys Melato – also known as King B – had Krugersdorpers on the edge of their seats as they watched the talented 19-year-old battle it out on the stage of Idols SA Season 14.
Since he entered the competition, the country has fallen in love with his big voice, big personality and trademark ‘vosho’. However, Sunday, 4 November was a bitter pill to swallow for his fans when he did not receive enough votes to put him through to the Top 3.
His journey, though, is one that will never be forgotten by his peers. The HR student has been a firm favourite since his dazzling Theatre Week Performance, which saw him get a standing ovation, and was followed up with another crowd-pleasing performance during the Top 16 Boys show.
He continued to put forth spectacular showstopper performances, all the way to the Top 6, where fans saw their favourites perform two songs each – a first for the season’s live shows.
During this episode, King B gave an impassioned performance of Kelly Khumalo’s Baby Please, gaining a standing ovation from both Somizi and Unathi. His follow-up was Adele’s Make You Feel My Love, accompanied by just a piano.
Unathi said she couldn’t wait to be invited to his one-man show so she can listen to him for three hours. Randall said King B could go through with just one song while others sing two. Somizi simply said, “Magnifique”.
In the Top 5, the contestants performed two songs each under the theme ‘How it should have been done’. They took butchered songs by Wooden Mic contenders and showed Mzansi how they should have been done.
King B got a thumbs up for his rendition of Beyonce’s Irreplaceable. He also chose Say Something by A Great Big World.
Randall offered some advice along with his praises.
Once in the Top 4, King B gifted Mzansi with a powerful rendition of Lebo Sekgobela’s Lion of Judah that had Unathi and several audience members in tears.
He closed the show with Kahle by Amanda Black. Unathi called his overall performance ‘well rounded and balanced’ and Zomizi begged for more colour and happiness from him the following week.
Unfortunately the star was sent packing when he wasn’t able to make it to the Top 3 due to a lack of votes. Despite the setback, many believe that this talented artist will continue to soar like an eagle in the sky.
This king will remain winner in the hearts of locals. Many insist that his cool, relaxed and comical demeanour has made them beam with pride.
