Grade 10 learner reaching for the stars
Young Sello is planning on building a cube satellite for his school. He wants to know what is out there and is willing to do whatever it takes to find out.
Sello Mathoko, 18, wants to be an astronaut.
Sello said that from the first time he learned of the moon landing back in the 1960s, he wanted to go into space.
And now he might just have the answer; young Sello wants to build a cube satellite for his school.
A cube satellite is a type of miniature satellite that has mainly been used in low Earth orbit but is being used more for interplanetary missions.
It is made up of 10 x 10 x 10cm cubes and weighs no more than 1,33kgs. These satellites are used for communication data and more than 800 have been launched into space since April this year.
Sello said his school does not teach them loads about science and he has always wondered if the things he reads about space are really true.
He believes that there is so much more for us to learn and he wants to be the one to introduce them to the world.
When he is not contemplating the universe, he does karate because it helps him focus and teaches him discipline, self-control and (of course) self-defence.
When his life orientation teacher told him that he was suited to a career in the army or law enforcement, the Grade 10 learner promptly said that he would not give up his dream of living among the stars.
