Re/Max doing its bit to help out by donating blood

The Re/Max team has taken it upon themselves to host a blood drive at their offices today.

The silly season is upon us and although we all see the posters and hear the ads that say ‘Arrive Alive’, there are those out there who do not adhere to road rules or the law.

This means that during the festive season, when more people are on the road, more accidents occur.

Janus Myburgh and Felicia du Plessis are donating blood today.

According to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) website, less than one per cent of South Africans are active blood donors.

One unit of blood only lasts 42 days and they are in need of a constant fresh supply of blood to save lives.

One unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives, the website states, and donors can donate every eight weeks.

The SANBS aims to collect 3 000 units of blood per day to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of blood.

With this in mind, Janus de Jonge, broker owner at Re/Max Town and Country on Voortrekker Road, said he and his staff decided they needed to help.

“Many of our agents are regular blood donors, so we decided we need to get our clients, friends and the public involved,” Janus added.

A blood drive was arranged at their offices and Janus said that they had 76 people who pledged to donate.

In order to donate you have to be older than 16 and younger than 65, weigh more than 50kg, lead a safe lifestyle and eat a meal or snack before donating.

If you want to find out where you can donate, visit the SANBS website at www.sanbs.org.za or phone their toll-free number on 0800 11 90 31.
