Feeling the itch to do a spring clean during your holiday?
Make sure your security system is on the list!
You are finally on holiday with some free time on your hands. It’s that time that many homeowners decide to do a Spring clean.
“Make sure your security system is on the list,” said Agnieszka Gryn, Fidelity ADT’s Regional Executive.
Just like any other appliance, a security system will experience wear-and-tear and needs to be maintained regularly to ensure it works optimally.
“What’s most important is that you test your system. With life as busy as it is, it may have been some time since you last did a check, so now would be a great time to ensure that your security system is working properly. It’s quick and easy,” she said.
If the system is not functioning properly, it could mean that the alarm activation signal may not reach the security company in the event that there is an emergency.
“Testing your alarm can be done remotely over the phone. If anything out of the ordinary is noted, a technician can be dispatched to sort out the problem. Testing should please be done at non-peak times at least once a month.”
Dirt, dust and insects can also cause problems with gate motors, beams and sensors.
“It may be worth walking around the house inside and out and giving everything a good wipe, including outside lights, beams and so on. You may also need to take covers off to check whether there are ants, spiders and so on that need to be removed. If in doubt, call on a professional to help you,” she advised.
Over time, home security needs can change. Agnieszka said now is also a good time for you to re-assess your overall security needs.
“This can be done during a walk around the property and by asking yourself whether there is a need for additional or motion-sensing lights or outdoor beams. Make sure your gate is secured and can’t be lifted off the rails. Trim back foliage which may interfere with your electric fence. Remember, your security service provider can offer advice if there is any uncertainty on how to identify security needs.”
Other tips regarding good security habits this Spring include equipping your domestic staff with panic buttons and making sure they know what to do and who to contact in an emergency.
“Why not get to know your neighbours and your neighbourhood too? This way you’ll be able to tell if something or someone doesn’t belong and be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially when arriving or leaving home.”
“And please ensure that your security service provider has the most up-to-date key-holder contact details for you. We want to make sure we can get to you when you need it,” Agnieszka concluded.
