This new year is the year of promise. We’ve made it through the tough days of 2018, and now it’s time for the sun to shine again, writes the News’ newest journalist, Jaco Human.
This is a new beginning for me as I set off on the road to adventure and sometimes peril that is journalism.
So, who am I? Most of my life I have lived right here in Krugersdorp where I matriculated at Hoërskool Noordheuwel. I was ready to take on the world.
I was given the opportunity to study at the Northwest University and I was going to make the best of every moment. I completed my BA Communications degree and went on to finish my BCom Marketing degree. After seven years of studying, working and bar-tending part time, I finished with far too many subjects under the belt to have any idea of where I was going.
After a year of stumbling through the grown-up world, pursuing marketing and public relations jobs, I felt down in the dumps about my prospects. It’s tough to find any kind of job, but nearly impossible to find something you actually love.
During the year I finished and self-published my first fiction novel and regained the deep love of writing that I thought I had lost. I became more convinced that I was meant to be a writer, and nothing else would do.
Then, a vacancy for a journalist at the News crossed my path. Combining my love of writing, and remembering my fascination with journalism while I was studying towards my BA, I decided to apply.
A little more than a year later, here I am!
There’s nothing like being a part of this community, getting to know everyone and covering topics that people really want, and need to know about. I hope to bring you the important news of the day in a way that is informative and easy to digest. I will do my utmost to be objective and respect every angle of every story.
Here’s to the best year any of us has ever had.
