Disabled cyclist competes in the toughest cycle challenge
Born with a disability which left his torso partially paralysed and his right arm underdeveloped, Anrico regularly participates in cycling events of more than 50 kilometres each.
The pride of the West Rand Association for the Physically Disabled, Andrico van Aarde, 44, competed in the 2018 Telkom 947 Challenge.
Andrico was born with cerebral palsy, a condition caused by damage to the developing brain, most often before birth, which leads to a physical defect. As a result, the right side of his upper body is partially paralysed and he was born with an underdeveloped arm which was amputated nearly 12 years ago.
On 18 November, Andrico participated in the 947 Challenge for the third consecutive year, cycling 94,7 kilometres in just under six hours. Clover SA sponsored him for the entire event.
During the year, he also competed in the Mogale Spring Cycle Race (54 kilometres), Rand Water Race for Victory (54 kilometres), Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge (41 kilometres) and the Berge and Dale Championship (110 kilometres).
He has qualified for the January 2019 Central Gauteng Cycling Trial for Persons with Disabilities.
Andrico said the 947 Challenge took place on an extremely hot day, but he persevered through the heat to finish within a time he could be proud of.
