Hundreds taken in by SPCA over the festive season
Hundreds of abandoned, stray, and confiscated animals call the SPCA home after the festive season.
The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA has taken in hundreds of animals after what proved to have been a chaotic festive season for the organisation.
The December period is a strenuously busy time for animal shelters, as this is typically the time when families go on holiday and leave their animals behind. It is of course also a traumatic period for dogs, especially when New Year’s Eve and the celebratory fireworks roll around.
According to the SPCA’s general manager, Mandy Cattanach, they’ve been so busy that they haven’t even had time to tally up the animals that made their way to the shelter. “It’s been absolutely chaotic; we’re just about full with all the animals that came in,” she said.
Being slightly sarcastic, Mandy took a dig at those giving one of the most common excuses the SPCA gets in December. “Somehow, every year, December is magically the time when everyone ‘moves into new complexes where no pets are allowed’,” she said.
Inspector Anica Pretorius added that people will often drop their animals off at the SPCA to be ‘taken care of’ while they’re on holiday, simply because they can’t take them with them. These weren’t the only ones they received however, as they also picked up loads of strays as well as confiscated animals from homes where they suffered neglect.
Considering the huge influx of animals, the SPCA wishes to place even more emphasis on their ‘adopt, don’t shop’ principle, urging residents to consider visiting the SPCA before shopping for a new furry friend.
