Some things to do this weekend when on a tight January budget
It seems that January will never come to an end ... but at least there are some budget friendly events happening.
Keeping the kids entertained on a tight January budget might seem difficult, but not with these events taking place this weekend.
Do make note!
Grasses course
19 JANUARY — Join in on a guided tour in Kloofendal Nature Reserve when Karen Spottiswood will discuss grasses. Please bring along your copy of Frits van Oudtshoorn’s Guide to Grasses of Southern Africa, a ruler for measuring the length of various grass parts, a magnifying glass to see the grass ligules more clearly. Suitable as a refresher course, also for novices to grass identification. Meet at 9am and costs are R150. For bookings, call FroK on 079 693 5608.
Frog evening

19 JANUARY — Join in on a guided tour with Kloofendal Nature Reserve as Warren Schmidt, author of Curious creatures: reptiles and amphibians of Southern Africa present a walk in the wetland and around the dam looking for frogs and other water creatures. Nets and sample jars will be provided. Participants are shown how to treat all living creatures with care and respect. Costs are R70 for adults, R60 for pensioners and R50 for children. For bookings call 079 693 5608.
Flea Market
19 JANUARY — There is a safe and secure flea market at Mogale City Town Hall every Saturday from 8am to 3pm. The entrance is in President Street. For further enquiries, contact Dehlia or Claudette on 011 953 3727.
Calling all bridge players

Two informal, fun, friendly but well-established bridge clubs (Florida North was established 35 years ago and Krugersdorp 15 years ago) on the West Rand welcome all bridge players. Join their circle of friendship for loads of fun, stimulation and good bridge three times a week. For further details, contact Helen Stocker on 011 660 2292 or 083 589 5690.
And for next week:
Moonlight Mazes
26 JANUARY — Honeydew Amaizing Mazes is hosting its first moonlight maze event for 2019. Bring your own picnic baskets (no braais) and torches. Arrive at 5.15pm, enjoy the sunset and play on the smaller mazes. Everyone then enters the maze together at about 6.15pm. Please be on time. Everyone goes into teams (four people in a team), within their own group, or just as a couple. Each team is given a quiz sheet and briefed, and then they enter the giant maze. It is great fun. Cost is R120 per child and R150 per adult. For more info, call Judy on 073 795 2174.
Annual general meeting
31 JANUARY — The Roodepoort Little Theatre will host its annual general meeting at Sooffah Guesthouse on Goldman Street, Florida at 7.15pm. All are welcome to attend the meeting, but please note that only members in good standing (i.e. subscriptions paid up to date), who have been members for a minimum of three months at the time of the meeting, will be eligible to vote.
