The Kagiso Police are warning residents to be alert as they have had a number of enquiries about unknown people who represent themselves as high ranking police officials.
Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police, said these bogus police officers would request details regarding stolen motor vehicles from the complainants.
The fraudsters then disappear and a few days later a member of the public would phone and complain that a certain police officer had called and demanded a cash deposit be paid into an account that he had given the details of.

The fake officer would tell the person that he has to pay the deposit to get his car back after it has been recovered. Once the money is deposited, the scammer disappears.
“We want to make it clear that no police official will ask you to deposit cash to get your car. When your car has been recovered, your investigation officer will call you to the police station as per the police process. That is where you will be informed and advised of what to do next and your investigating officer will assist you until your car has been returned,” Sibiya explained.
