“Criminals are now targeting learners as soft targets. Most high school learners carry expensive cellphones, and tablets that are state property. That makes some of them vulnerable, especially when they are seen alone,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.
He said they recently had a case where a learner was standing outside a local high school, waiting for a sibling on 8 February at 2.30pm.
The learner was approached by a man with a knife, who searched his pockets and took his cellphone while threatening his life if he resisted.

The man then walked away and joined some of his friends who were waiting for him. The boy headed off in the opposite direction to look for help.
He spotted a police vehicle and signaled for them to stop. After telling the police what just happened to him, they gave chase, managed to catch the suspect and returned the boy’s cellphone to him. The man was arrested and charged with robbery with a weapon.
The man has appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court and was remanded for a bail application.
