Soul City a war zone after mutilated body is found

Police had their hands full when a confrontation broke out between illegal miners and residents of the settlement.

Soul City, a settlement near Chamdor, has been in chaos the past few days, following the gruesome murder of a woman.

The mutilated body of a woman was found in the informal settlement on Tuesday night, 12 February.

The woman’s chin, upper right arm and neck were slashed open and her ears were missing.

Residents of the settlement believed that it was Basotho nationals who killed the woman and a confrontation ensued.

Yesterday, 13 February, the police responded to reports about the confrontation between illegal miners and the community. When they arrived, they came under fire, but managed to chase their assailants into the mine dumps.

A police helicopter and the K9 units were called in for assistance.

The police managed to arrest six people for being in the country illegally. In addition, a 62-year-old and a 60-year-old were arrested for possession of drugs and an unlicensed firearm respectively and three others were arrested for having rounds of ammunition in their possession.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police, said they are aware the miners are heavily armed and that is why they approach them with caution. However, the criminals should not be under the impression they can do what they want as the police are watching them with an eagle eye and plan to rid the area of criminal influences.

Soul City has been a bit of a war zone for little less than a year and residents of the settlement have complained that they are being run by the illegal miners who continuously threaten and bully them.

Captain Sibiya said that although residents are scared to report these crimes, they must not take the law into their own hands and must report these matters to the police as soon as possible.
