[GRAPHIC IMAGES] Mob justice left a man gravely injured

Two men were chased down by Munsieville residents on Monday night after they attacked a little girl in the street.

Some serious mob justice was dealt out at about 9pm on Monday, 18 February, when community members chased down and beat a man.

According to Steward Gaonakala, an eyewitness on the scene, two men were chased for about 100 metres. One escaped, but the other was captured by a group of furious Munsieville residents.

According to Gaonakala, the two men approached a young girl on a dimly lit street near the Thuto Lefa High School. They forcefully took her cellphone before stabbing her. It is still unclear why the men felt the need to hurt her after they had already taken the phone.

The girl managed to yell when the men ran away, alerting residents in the street and houses around her. A crowd very quickly formed to pursue the men. The crowd proceeded to drive one of the men to the ground and attack him with fist blows, kicks and even some blunt weapons.

Reportedly, police arrived at the scene at about 10pm. By this point the man was lying in the street, bloodied and bruised. He was completely unconscious, with injuries visible all across his body, and his pants and shoes missing.

“The man was still unconscious at 11.30pm, when I left the scene. The police then called for an ambulance,” Gaonakala said.

He also noted that the community is long past tired of the crime in the settlement, and will probably be taking the law into their own hands more often. This is a very disturbing idea, as police have been warning residents to refrain from vigilantism, and to rather inform them of crimes like this as soon as possible.

The News has reached out to the police for feedback, but has as of yet not received any more information.
