Public weed shop in Krugersdorp under police investigation

Police officers and investigators arrived at the alleged 'dagga/ health shop' to check its legality.

Many residents raised an eyebrow when a so-called ‘health shop’ opened up in Viljoen Street. Why? Well, this little store allegedly openly advertised and sold cannabis – or marijuana/ weed/ dagga – in many forms to the general public.

It seems the state regulations around cannabis are still somewhat unclear, and most people don’t know what is legal and what isn’t. Selling the product, though, is definitely not legal.

Early in the afternoon on Tuesday, 26 February, police showed up at the premises and commenced their investigation. Krugersdorp Police station commander Brigadier Ngwako Mashao reported that after the West Rand K9 Unit conducted their investigation, two young men were arrested for dealing in cannabis.

“Police followed up on information about a shop selling dagga in Viljoen Street. The inspection of property revealed that the shop was indeed selling dagga as the menu and prices of the dagga were noticed. Muffins, which were suspected to have been baked with dagga in them, raw dagga, dagga plants and an undisclosed amount of cash were then confiscated. The two men were arrested uninjured, and have been detained at the Krugersdorp Police cells. The investigation continues,” Mashao said.

The suspects appeared before the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court yesterday afternoon.
