An Integrated Rural Safety Operation by police yielded great success yesterday, 6 March, according to Captain Raymond Sebinyane, spokesperson for the Krugersdorp Police.
They arrested a 30-year-old man for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, among other successes.
At about 1pm the police were conducting their operations around Krugersdorp and went to Windsor Road, the Lanwen informal settlement and Wentworth Park where they suspected that illegal mining operations were taking place.

The officers saw a man hiding in a hole and searched him. Underneath the blanket that he was lying on they found two rifles, eight 308 rounds of ammunition and 69x9mm rounds.
When the police asked him for the licence to possess the firearm and ammunition, he could not produce it or provide them with a clear explanation for being in possession of the firearms or the ammunition.
The Krugersdorp Police arrested him and later found out that one of the firearms was reported stolen in Klerksdorp on 27 August 2018. The other one was stolen on 3 September during a housebreaking, also in Klerksdorp.

“The investigation will continue to see whether the firearms were used in any other criminal activities,” said Sebonyane.
He added that during the highly successful operation they searched 39 vehicles, 77 people and 37 shacks where they found two shovels, two picks, four hammers, one crowbar, one dropper and three bags with gold-bearing material, and one person selling liquor without a licence.
“The West Rand District commissioner applauds the members for a job well done to remove the firearms from the wrong hands. He also thanks the patrollers for assisting the police in fighting crime in the district,” said Sebonyane.
