Munsieville youth says they are fed up

An alleged fight in Munsieville led to the community taking matters into their own hands by resorting to mob justice outside the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital.

Last night (17 March) protesters took to the streets of Munsieville and burned tyres.

According to posts on Facebook the residents of Munsieville are fed up with the crime and police response in their area.

One post reads: “The youth of Munsieville is tired of murders happening in the Kasie. A 32-year-old was murdered on Sunday morning, so they are saying enough is enough.”

The Krugersdorp Police Station sent out a statement saying they are investigating a case of mob justice and malicious damage to property following an insident at the Dr Yusuf Dadoo hospital on Sunday morning (17 March).

It is alleged that about 60 members of the Munsieville community went to the hospital in two minibuses while some walked there.

They were following an alleged murder suspect who had fled the scene and was on his way to hospital for treatment.

The suspect is believed to have stabbed a 32-year-old man who died of his injuries, as well as a 34-year-old man who was taken to the hospital for treatment, in an apparent fight in Munsieville.

The statement said the suspect was being treated for minor injuries when the crowd arrived at the hospital. They overpowered the hospital security personnel, grabbed the suspect and dragged him outside the hospital premises where they assaulted him. When police came to his rescue, the community members fled the scene but the damage had already been done.

The hospital’s medicine room door, fire hose, oxygen cylinders, HB meters, computers and glucose meters were damaged, according to the statement.

The wounded suspect was then taken to an undisclosed hospital under police guard.

The West Rand District commissioner, Major General PF Kekana said in the statement that he condemned the actions of the community members and also urged them not to take matters into their own hands.

As of this afternoon, everything seemed quiet in the township.

This was not the first incident of this kind involving the Munsieville community. The News has reported on other incidents like these.
