Body removed from underground shaft

A suspected illegal miner's body was removed from a shaft and placed at the side of the road before police arrived to investigate.

Motorists travelling between Randfontein and Krugersdorp on Monday, 18 March, would have noticed heavier than usual traffic, and cars parked at the side of the road near the intersection between the R28 and Main Reef Road.

A crowd and a number of police officers were gathered next to a field by the road as the police cordoned off the area and started their investigation into a body lying in the field.

Eyewitnesses on the scene stated that three men had entered an abandoned mine shaft, but one of the men became separated from the others. Reportedly, the remaining two men searched for the third, and later found him, unresponsive, in the shaft. It is unclear if he had passed away by this point. According to an on-scene report, the two men spent some time, maybe a day, trying to move the man out of the shaft. His body was then laid out in the field beside the road, and covered in blankets.

The two other men were still on the scene when the police arrived.

Cars stopped by the side of the road and crowds formed to look at the scene, but police officers easily controlled the scene and blocked off access to the deceased’s body.

It is still unclear how or why the man passed away.
