Important by-election date to diarise

Andries will take the baton over from the previous councillor, Annette Fourie, who has retired.

A by-election in Mogale City will take place on 27 March 2019 in Ward 18, which consists of the Kenmare,

Rangeview, Siverfields, Silverfields Park and Mindalore North suburbs.

While the National Election’s stakeholders prepare for an intense race during May, the Democratic Alliance is fast-tracking by entering into a defining by-election in Ward 18.

A runner ready for this race is West Rander, Dr Andries Eksteen. Andries served as a member of the Ward Committee in Ward 97 of the Johannesburg Metro, alongside his wife, Ina, for five years.

He served in the portfolio of Health and Social Development. During this time he was instrumental in the successful relocation of an informal settlement by giving them better housing in a safer area with the necessary infrastructure. He and his wife are both actively involved in different community projects on the West Rand. They started a pre-school and primary school in the Kya Sand informal settlement because the upliftment and development of families is close to their hearts. Andries started out as a high school teacher, and later entered into pastoral ministry. He has 32 years’ experience in serving and caring for people.

As the DA candidate for Ward 18, Andries emphasised a critical aspect in the ward, saying, “Ward 18 is the centre of the water supply for Krugersdorp. The water disruptions in Krugersdorp are unacceptable and pressure must be applied on Council to address the issues at hand. Upgrading the infrastructure with regular maintenance is one of my priorities to give service to the residents”.

He further emphasised the importance of family and children within the ward.

“General safety in the ward must be upheld to keep families safe. Children’s education and safety is of utmost importance in building a healthy community. With major schools in Ward 18, the votes of the residents can secure their necessary upkeep.”

When asked about his focus for Ward 18, Andries replied with passion, “Service is a constitutional right that needs to be restored on local government level. Pressure must be applied on council to upgrade infrastructure, keep up the road maintenance levels, especially in respect of pothole repairs, and upgrade public facilities and the environment. Another pressing matter is the constant disappearance of the lids of manholes, which makes them a danger to the public. Continuous onsite inspections must be done to ensure that safety measures are implemented on the different levels of service delivery”.

Andries will take the baton over from the previous councillor, Annette Fourie, who has retired.

“We salute Annette for the great work she has done over years within Ward 18.”

The DA is confident that Andries will influence the local council to give excellent service to the residents of Ward 18.

Spectators in the political arena are keeping their eyes on this race, as it may be a forerunner of what can be expected during the month of May in Gauteng.

Andries is available to meet the residents in Ward 18. He can be contacted on 081 714 8919.
