Police arrest litterbug after he allegedly gets violent

What started as a case of littering quickly turned into assault when a man allegedly refused to cooperate with the police.

“Undermining the law and those entrusted with enforcing it will never be tolerated at any given time or circumstance,” said the Kagiso Police’s station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna.

In a statement sent to the News, the Kagiso Police said that Mogale City traffic officers arrested a 39-year-old man on 15 April at about 11am.

The man was arrested for allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting an officer.

According to the statement, the officers were observing traffic at a stop sign on the R41 and M13 routes near Azaadville when they noticed a man throwing garbage out of the window at the intersection.

When he was approached by the officers, he picked his litter up. He then refused to produce his driver’s licence, said the statement.

“One officer tried a few times to get the suspect’s driver’s licence, but instead the suspect pushed and insulted him,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.

The litterbug further refused to show the police his identity documents and tried to drive off instead, but officers blocked his way.

The suspect was eventually overpowered and arrested. His wife later arrived at the scene to fetch the car.

The man was detained at the Kagiso Police Station and a docket of resisting arrest and assaulting a police official was opened, according to Sibiya.
