Taking to the skies with new laboratory
It was an exciting day when the Sakhikamva Foundation held a grand opening for their second Stream laboratory, which will be built at the Lanseria International Airport.
The Sakhikamva Foundation, in partnership with Skyhawk Aviation and Tata Consultancy Services, held a grand opening for the country’s second Stream Laboratory at Lanseria Airport on 8 April.
‘Stream’ is an acronym for Science, Technology, Robotics Engineering, Aerospace and Mathematics, and presents students with hands-on experience at learning more about aviation.

Underprivileged students from various schools in the area were invited to to join the opening.
Sakhikamva is a non-profit organisation which focuses on aviation awareness and skills development for the youth of South Africa. The Foundation is based in Cape Town and offers a number of programmes including the Stream Laboratories.
They believe these classrooms will help them to grow the next generation of pilots and aviators in the industry.
The laboratory will feature only the most up to date equipment and software necessary for the students to develop their aviation-related curiosity and skills.

Students will be given the opportunity to participate in 3D printing, robotics, coding and artificial intelligence workshops.
The nose of a Boeing 737 200 will also be converted to be used for practical training and to give the children the most realistic flight experience with simulations and interactive areas.
Afterwards, there was a lucky draw and two of the students in the crowd won a model Boeing airplane. The students were also allowed to go into the classroom and participate in simulations and check out the interactive displays.
