#Imademymark — Disabled voters get to cast their votes at home

Disabled persons got the chance to vote in their residential centre where trained staff could help them whenever the need arose.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has made special arrangements for local residents who were unable, or for whom it is extremely difficult, to vote at the voting stations on 8 May.

For the West Rand Association for the Physically Disabled staff it is difficult to transport the disabled residents to and from voting stations, one of the reasons being that it is a problem to find enough suitable vehicles to transport them.

At the voting station it is difficult for some of the residents to stand in a queue for any extended periods, and they often get easily distracted.

The IEC officers went out to the centre on 6 May to set up voting stations in one of the halls.

Ample preparations were made for all the disabled residents to move around easily, and the trained staff could help them whenever necessary. It is also within walking distance from their rooms, dining hall and entertainment area.

The residents were all too happy to get the opportunity to vote, as they strongly believed that their vote would make a difference.
