Nurses dance for International Nurses’ Day
In appreciation of their hard work, and to give them some much-needed positive attention, the Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital celebrated their nurses with a special awards ceremony.
On the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday, International Nurses’ Day was implemented.
Florence Nightingale is regarded as the mother of modern nursing, and many around the world look up to her accomplishments in the field.

Though the day is usually celebrated on 12 May of each year, the Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital opted to move it just a week on and honour their hardworking nurses on Friday, 17 May. Management organised a luncheon and award ceremony in the hospital’s recreational centre to award these nurses for their consistent hard work and special care for their patients.
The nurses work under very stressful, and sometimes dangerous conditions, but they put in their all and try to make things as comfortable as possible for their patients.

Chief Operating Officer, Jimmy Mapunya, said, “It’s important for us to highlight and reward the things that are not seen by the community. I would like to say to nurses that they must continue to do the good work they do, as they are the mirrors of this centre. If a mirror is broken, it cannot accurately reflect what it sees to the outside world.”
Truly, nurses are the people that patients see most often, and they are the image of a hospital.
