Police warn community not to fall prey to job scammers

The police want to warn the community of another scam doing the rounds. Residents are urged to be vigilant and not believe everything these criminals tell them.

“Everyone is aware of our country’s high unemployment rate, but do not allow criminals to take advantage of your desperation. Be on the alert, always,” said the Kagiso police.

This statement comes as a warning to people looking for jobs as there are many scams out there.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police, said they are concerned about yet another job scam doing the rounds.

“Unsuspecting and desperate residents are lured into believing that they will be offered jobs, but realise later on that they have been fooled and that their property has been stolen,” explained Sibiya.

He mentioned that the Kagiso Police had received three complaints in one month related to this recent scam.

A group of three or four men are allegedly going to people’s homes and asking them to submit their Curriculum Vitae (CVs) for vacant posts that needed to be filled urgently.

“They mention departments that have advertised posts in the last three or four weeks,” Sibiya explained.

The victim is then asked to submit extra copies of his CV. The men then show great interest and concern in helping victims to get the extra copies made, even offering to take them to the nearest internet cafe.

As soon as the victims leave to go to the internet cafe, the men’s accomplices, who have stayed behind, break into the victim’s home and steal what they can.

“Kagiso Police would like warn the public to be more vigilant and cautious about such scams,” said Sibiya.

Sibiya offered some tips to keep the community on its feet and away from these predators:

• Do not allow strangers into your home and do not believe everything they say.

• Always remember to verify the job posts with the department mentioned.

• Do not leave your home unlocked, no matter what.
