Fanatics feed the hungry on the street

Households banded together to help feed the homeless and other struggling Krugersdorpers one cold winter morning.

The Toyota Fanatics have gone into the streets and started taking control. But, don’t worry, this ever-growing group only wants to help out and give those in need full bellies and a bit more hope for the future.

The Toyota Fanatics is an initiative that was started by a few 4X4 enthusiasts who felt an undeniable need to help their community out as best they could. In a couple of months, they acquired about 1 000 members, and saw their chance to increase their efforts and touch even more lives.

On Saturday, 1 June, they set up a few tables outside of the Tower of Life homeless shelter in the Krugersdorp CBD, and invited passersby to stop. Quite a long queue of destitute and, sometimes homeless, people waited their turn to dig through a large pile of donated clothes to pick out something they could use and really needed this winter. From there, they lined up for a nice warm meal.

Households who wanted to help out with the initiative each made a big pot of soup at home, just like they’d usually make for their own families. Cups, utensils and bread rolls were acquired by the Toyota Fanatics, which added to the delicious-smelling soup servings.

The day wasn’t done, and another group of Toyota Fanatics handed out blankets, bread and soup at another location in Middelburg. This was also quite a success and proved that the initiative was truly growing fast and spreading into other cities in the country as well.

The Toyota Fanatics have wanted help out as many people and organisations across the country as possible ever since they started the group. With this in mind, they created stickers that drivers, no matter the car brand, could buy and stick on their car to show their support. The proceeds from the two types of stickers, which are sold for R15 and R30 respectively, go toward helping these groups.
