Representatives from about 20 schools in and around Krugersdorp joined the police recently at one of their quarterly meetings to discuss issues affecting the schools and learners.

The Krugersdorp Police and representatives from schools in the area meet every quarter to discuss issues that may arise in schools and how the police can assist.

On 12 June, representatives of the police, schools, the Department of Health as well as the Teddy Bear Clinic met at the Krugersdorp Police Station. About 20 schools from the area were represented at the meeting.

They discussed diversion programmes for children in schools, public transport, and the different rules and regulations surrounding the transport.

An environmental health practitioner from the West Rand District Municipality, Cate Ntimbani, spoke to the attendees about the proper procedures and requirements schools and tuck shops must adhere to regarding the children’s health and safety.

She explained that every food handler is required to have a certificate of acceptability, and that preparation surfaces should be of stainless steel, among other requirements. She explained that the department is busy with inspections at schools in the area to ensure that they meet the standards in terms of the regulations.

The group discussed issues at schools, with specific emphasis on theft out of motor vehicles as it is on the rise in the area.

The police suggested doing a fire awareness and safety campaign after the school holidays, and also discussed how to safeguard schools after hours and during school holidays.

Alicia Bester from the Teddy Bear Foundation told representatives about a school holiday programme they are running for the children of Magaliesburg. During this programme they will give awareness talks about abuse and how to prevent it.

The next meeting will be held in September.
