WATCH: Viking tales come alive in Muldersdrift

Viking fans recently had the opportunity to live out their fantasy as the Viking World came to life in Muldersdrift.

In recent years, Viking warriors have become more popular. Around the globe, tales of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons have made people believe in mighty Viking warriors.

Tales of sea voyages, invading distant lands, shield maidens and Viking wars had people wanting more of what sometimes seemed like a fairytale.

The beautiful princess Iona Pyke and her brother the brave knight Arlo Pyke.

On 8 June, Alter Egos alternative experiences made these tales come alive at the Medieval Fayre’s Viking Invasion, held at La Vue Guest lodge in Muldersdrift.

Stepping onto the fayre grounds was like being transported back in time as villagers, warriors, minstrels, fire dancers and many more roamed the grounds eating turkey legs and drinking ales and cocktails out of skull-shaped glasses, which made visitors feel like toasting the victory over their enemies.

Every part of the grounds had something for the visitors to do and the first stop had to be the dress-up tents.

If you had not already come dressed as a fierce warrior, this is where you could pick up the clothes and makeup needed to change yourself into someone else.

Jaco and Zelmari Lourens from the Feathers and Scales wildlife education and rehab centre brought Evane the owl with them.

Morag the Witch walked around peddling love potions to unsuspecting new lovers, while palm readers told the fortunes of those who wanted to know what the future would bring.

All over, warriors were training under shady trees to eventually fight in the arena as shield maidens and warriors took on their enemies in battle.

Ye Olde Tavern Quiz tested the fayre-goers’ knowledge and if your mind was not your strongest weapon you could indulge in axe-throwing and mounted archery.

Vegetable justice was served by tomato throwing, caber tossing and pillow fighting, while the littlest warriors could fight real knights.

The only thing left to do after stuffing yourself with food and enjoying every part of the fayre was to ride off into the sunset on one of the unicorns or dragons.
