The Kagiso Police consider the Leratong Hospital taxi rank a hot spot for hijackings and robberies directed at women.
On 12 June at about 1pm and on 22 June at about 11pm there were two separate incidents that were reported to the Kagiso Police.
In the first incident a woman was robbed of her laptop while waiting to be picked up by her partner. Two assailants were involved in the robbery.
“The area next to Leratong Hospital and the intersection was once infamous for the incidents of rape and armed robbery committed against women who were waiting for transport to areas such as Randfontein, Swanieville and Extension 12,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.

He added that police managed to arrest two serial rapists and worked tirelessly with the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit to ensure that the two rapists received maximum prison terms, including life sentences.
“We also wish to warn motorists about the intersection of the R41 and Impala Road. The area is also a hot spot for hijackings,” explained Sibiya.
He said that two hijackings had taken place at this intersection within the space of two weeks.
“We urge motorists to be more cautious around that area at all times and be vigilant, especially for people standing at the side of the road who look suspicious. The public must also keep their vehicle doors and windows locked and refrain from offering someone a lift,” he added.
The Kagiso Police urge everyone who will be boarding transport late at night or driving in the Leratong Hospital area to be vigilant and also make alternative arrangements to get home safely.
They are appealing to the public to assist them with information that can lead to the arrest of the robbers and hijackers.
