Miss Unicorn pageant sets out to help underprivileged children

Boipelo Tlhabi is using her years of pageantry knowledge to help orphaned children by collecting care packages filled with important things that the children need every day.

The Miss Unicorn pageant, first of its kind, saw 66 young models from the West Rand area, all adorned in unicorn-style gowns take to the runway to amaze the judges.

This wonderfully animated day was the brainchild of 12-year-old Miss Mini Teen South Africa Boipelo Tlhabi, and was successfully organised by her with a helping hand from pageant mom Tidimalo Tlhabi. The event’s main purpose was to collect donation packets, called ‘U matter boxes’, which would be given to the Just In Time Baby Sanctuary in Randfontein, Baby Moses Sanctuary in Helderkruin and the Glorious Child Care Centre in Soweto. Boipelo’s aim was to gather enough boxes to help 365 children. The Miss Unicorn pageant ended up bringing in 323 of these charity boxes. Each box contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, a wash cloth, soap, underwear, a toy, and sanitary towels for the older girls.

Boipelo’s next target is to collect more of these care packages to deliver to the Divine Orphans and Outreach hom in Mohlakeng, Randfontein.

The master of ceremonies for the event was Rodney Prins, who is the project manager for the Randfontein Arts and Culture Association. On the judging panel for the day were Mrs SA Top 10 finalist, Melissa Charnley; Belies by Clarise Boutique owner, Clarise Marais, from Pretoria; Miss Junior South Africa 2017, Bianca Rautenbach; and Miss Million Dollar 2018, Lesego Sathikge.
