Weather warning: Cold front may lead to increased risk of colds and flu

A cold front is expected to spread across Gauteng on Monday and Tuesday, with Wednesday seeing a period of relief.

A large cold front is expected to reach Gauteng this week, with estimates saying that it might hit at about noon on Monday, 1 July.

Monday and Tuesday will bear the brunt of the cold front, with predicted temperatures of about 0°

–1° Celsius during the early morning hours and about 17° and 16° Celsius, respectively, in the afternoons. Monday, especially, will experience cold winds, and cloudy conditions over parts of Gauteng are probable.

Wednesday will see a fast recovery period, with temperatures that may reach 1° and 20° Celsius during the morning and afternoon. Thursday’s temperatures will increase to about 3° Celsius in the morning with a constant 20° in the afternoon, and Friday will bring a still chilly 4° Celsius in the morning and 21° in the afternoon.

Earlier reports noted that Friday temperatures might reach about 6° Celsius in the morning and 23° in the afternoon.

After Monday, the rest of the week should experience sunny conditions.

The Gauteng Weather Facebook page noted that there will be a “… cool start to the week in parts of Gauteng with early forecasts suggesting the first freezing/ below freezing temperatures for central Johannesburg due to a cold snap,” adding that there will be a higher propensity for colds and flu outbreaks in correlation with the cold front. Remember, then, to go get your flu injection if you have not received one this winter, consume enough Vitamin C, keep active, wash your hands regularly, make sure rooms/ spaces are well ventilated and limit direct person-to-person contact where possible.

Pets should also be kept in mind during extreme cold circumstances. Remember to clean your pets paws after they have walked around in cold and damp areas, apply Vaseline to their paws before going out on walks and remove the Vaseline again upon returning. Do not place the dog’s bed or blanket on cold floor surfaces and make sure the beds won’t get wet, and remember that dogs living indoors in cold periods may be less active and will require smaller food portions to stay healthy.
