Violent protests – vehicles set on fire roads blocked

For the past few days, protesters have been wreaking havoc in the small town of Hekpoort and road users are being warned to be careful.

The Hekpoort Police and the community have been struggling with road closures for the past few days while protesters were demonstrating their unhappiness with service delivery.

The protests took a very violent turn in the early hours of this morning (23 July) when protesters burned a truck and bakkie. It is reported that they are throwing stones at passing vehicles.

Road users are advised to avoid the Hekpoort and Oostermoed areas as protesters have been blocking off roads since Friday. According to reports, all roads leading into Hekpoort have been closed. The R563 has also been blocked off from the direction of Krugersdorp at the top of the mountain and at the Bekker School turn-off.

The Hekpoort Police have confirmed that the R563 and R560 roads have been closed off with burning tyres.

The Hekpoort Police and Public Order Policing are monitoring the situation.
