[WATCH] Behind the scenes of the journalistic experience
Local journalists film their experiences while reporting on events and serious news stories. Watch this early journalist vlog about an airshow to see what it's all about.
Here at the Caxton Joburg West offices, home to the Krugersdorp News, Roodepoort Record, Roodepoort Northsider and Randfontein Herald, the editorial department has realised that our readers often want to know more about what goes on behind the scenes.
With this in mind, journalist Jaco Human and layout designer CJ Heyman have started vlogging (a video journal of sorts) about their experiences when heading out to events, interviews and breaking news incidents.
Watch the vlog right here:
The purpose of these vlogs is to give our readers, and hopefully future journalists, a clearer understanding of what it is your local community journalists do, and what it’s actually like in the field.
Local news can be broken down into two simple categories: hard news, and soft news. Hard news encompasses anything relating to crime, accidents, death, municipal stories, and so on.
“With soft news, we set out to tell the stories of our community. This might be doing a profile or interview on a public figure, or covering a public event,” Jaco said.
In this video, Jaco and CJ vlog about a spot landing, classic car and air festival which was held during a recent weekend.
Though not as serious a story as some may believe the media should cover, it gives an exciting look into the fun side of being a journalist. More behind the scenes action in the life of a journalist will follow as the pair film their experiences while tracking down all kinds of newsworthy stories.
