West Rand Police are ready to eradicate crime

The West Rand police have not only conducted another successful O Kae Molao operation, but they say they are preparing for the festive season when criminals want to take advantage of their communities.

In a statement by Constable Lucky Matome from Tarlton Police Corporate Communications, police officers are faced with a daily battle against bribery, intimidation and retribution, among other issues.

“Many of our police officers in the district still give honour and dignity to the uniform they wear,” he explained.

During the past weekend, the West Rand Police held another one of their O Kae Molao operations. Matome said that the 158 suspects who were arrested during these operations are a clear indication of the officers’ dedication and commitment towards reducing and eradicating crime within the district.

The arrests included suspects who were nabbed for rape, possession of suspected stolen goods, domestic violence related cases, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, housebreaking and theft, common assault and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The district has been hard at work to address contact crimes of which alcohol is one of the major contributing factors,” Matome said.

He went on to say that through an intensive partnership with the Gauteng Liquor Board, the police have started to ensure compliance and have even closed down a number of non-complying liquor outlets.

He explained that the West Rand District Commissioner, Major General PF Kekana’s vision is to ensure a society where everyone lives in a safe environment and communities play an active role in creating and maintaining that environment.

Kekana wants people to feel that they are being safeguarded against crime and other forms of violence, and have equal access and recourse to high-quality service when affected by such incidents.

“The community of the West Rand is encouraged to be vigilant, especially now that we are approaching the festive season when law-abiding citizens are targeted by criminals and robbed of their hard-earned money,” Matome went on to say.

The plan is to work closely with businesses and to ensure that senior citizens are safe. High visibility and awareness campaigns within certain identified hot spots in the districts are some of the ways they plan to achieve this.

“We will intensify the operations and suspect-tracing to make sure we remove those bad elements from our community,” said Kekana.
