Serving, by feeding those in need

St Ursula's Grade 11s recently visited the Holy Rosary Catholic Church to give a helping hand in the soup kitchen.

At St Ursula’s School, the learners and teachers live by their school motto, ‘Serviam’, which means ‘to serve’, and no one did it better than their Grade 11 learners recently.

“We approached the Holy Rosary Catholic Church where Friar Fidgeon and Friar Barnard are the Parish priests. There are also some very dedicated ladies, who give their time and love to prepare meals for the needy,” explained Belinda Espag, marketing manager for the school.

At the Holy Rosary Catholic Church’s soup kitchen, they feed about 150 people on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Grade 11s visited them on Friday, 23 August to help prepare and serve food to the needy.

At the school, every grade, starting with Grade 10, has a Serviam project that they take on every year, and as part of their Life Orientation curriculum they have to do at least 20 hours community service each year.

The learners were busy from early in the morning, chopping veggies, washing dishes and helping out with odd jobs.

The school also collected non-perishable foodstuffs during the winter months and donated them to the church. They donated soup, noodles, soya mince and spaghetti, among others.

“The food collected by our school community will go a long way to fill some empty tummies,”added Belinda.
