Hundreds of years worth of sentences for West Rand criminals

A quick look at some of the West Rand convictions for 2019.

While national headlines are dominated by murder, rape and other horrendous crimes, we sometimes lose faith in our justice system and in the police members tasked to protect us.

The West Rand Police have, however, been hard at work behind the scenes. Although we do not always see them, they send many criminals to jail every year.

Among the 2019 convictions is of Onica Gabonewe from Hekpoort who was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment in January for a murder committed in 2016.

Convictions ranged from attempted murder and murder, to housebreaking and arson, among other. Krugersdorp and Randfontein were two of the towns that had the most convictions.

Randfontein had some pretty big convictions with Obaleeng Gabaotse being sentenced to four years for arson, Petrus Pani Tstatsi receiving 13 years for a 2018 murder, Luroayne Lucky Thomas received a 14-year sentence for a 2016 murder of which four years were suspended for five years.

Jan Jimmy Jansen and Stephen Lakay both received hefty sentences in April 2019 for crimes they committed in Muldersdrift in 2016. Both of them received 242 years and six months imprisonment, as well as three life sentences.

Their crimes included attempted murder, murder, armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
